Challenge
The project involved replacing aging office buildings within the UNON compound that had reached the end of their lifecycle. The challenge was to develop a future-ready workplace that meets the United Nations’ operational, security, and sustainability requirements while respecting the ecological sensitivity and cultural identity of the site. The scale and complexity required integrating multiple buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure into a cohesive, highly secure, and flexible working environment.
Approach
DAO adopted a holistic, masterplan-led approach that integrates architecture, landscape, and infrastructure into a unified system. The design emphasizes flexible, column-free workspaces, natural light and ventilation, and strong connections between indoor and outdoor environments. Inspired by Kenya’s cultural diversity and natural context, the architectural language reflects both local identity and UN values. Sustainability was central, incorporating net-zero strategies, photovoltaic systems, water efficiency, and environmentally responsible material selection. Connectivity across the site was enhanced through bridges, shaded pathways, and accessible routes.
Impact
The project establishes a new benchmark for sustainable, secure, and adaptable office environments within international institutional campuses. It enhances the functionality and resilience of the UNON compound while promoting healthier, more collaborative workspaces. By integrating nature, culture, and advanced environmental strategies, the development supports the United Nations’ global vision and strengthens its presence in Nairobi as a leading international hub.
