Challenge

The core challenge was to design a master plan that honors the deeply rooted cultural and architectural identity of the Aseer region, particularly Abha, while transforming it into a forward-looking urban destination. The design needed to balance authenticity with innovation, integrate heritage routes, preserve the unique natural terrain, and accommodate a wide range of residential, hospitality, and commercial functions—all within the broader goals of Vision 2030 and the Aseer Economic Development Strategy.

Approach

DAO approached the Aseer Master Plan by analyzing the spatial, environmental, and cultural DNA of Abha and its surroundings. The project centered around Al Wadi, a historical valley that traverses the heart of the city from west to east, connecting natural landmarks and heritage routes such as Al Souda Road and Abha Lake. Drawing from the architectural traditions of Asir, a contemporary Assiri design language was developed and applied to key typologies, including villas, residential buildings, serviced apartments, a hotel, resort, and a community center. The master plan was envisioned to elevate the quality of life through walkability, cultural immersion, and ecological sensitivity. DAO’s design strategy emphasized a fluid integration between built form and the existing topography, while weaving together vibrant destinations and lifestyle hubs that serve both residents and visitors.

Impact

The Aseer Master Plan sets a new benchmark for sustainable urban development in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. By preserving the essence of Abha’s heritage and layering it with modern urban planning principles, the project fosters a unique sense of identity and belonging. It positions Abha as a leading cultural and touristic destination in line with Vision 2030—where tradition and innovation converge to shape the future of living in the Aseer region.
