Challenge:
Dabab Street, like many urban streets, faced the challenge of being predominantly car-oriented, with limited facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with mobility challenges. The street lacked sufficient green spaces and public areas that could contribute to the overall aesthetic and environmental quality of the neighborhood. The challenge was to transform this heavily trafficked street into a vibrant, people-centered urban space that would enhance mobility, accessibility, and the quality of life for all residents while fostering a more sustainable and inviting environment.
Approach:
The design approach focused on creating a human-centered, pedestrian-friendly street by integrating a variety of features that prioritize people over vehicles. Key elements of the transformation include the addition of green spaces, green corridors, and public seating areas to promote a welcoming and environmentally sustainable atmosphere. The design also incorporates cycling lanes to encourage sustainable mobility and ADA-compliant pavements to ensure accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. This approach aimed to not only beautify Dabab Street but also make it a fully inclusive space for all users, regardless of age or ability.
Impact:
Once completed, the Dabab Street Enhancement will transform the street into a vibrant urban space that fosters greater pedestrian activity, cycling, and social interaction. By prioritizing human needs over vehicles, the project will enhance the aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability of the area, improving the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The addition of green spaces will contribute to a healthier urban environment, while the improved accessibility will ensure that people of all abilities can navigate the street easily. Ultimately, the project will serve as a model for creating more inclusive, sustainable, and people-focused urban spaces in Riyadh.
