Challenge:
The Justice Palace District in Riyadh faced the challenge of preserving its historical and cultural heritage while adapting to modern urban demands. The district needed to balance the preservation of existing shops and the introduction of new businesses such as restaurants and retail outlets. At the same time, the district needed to improve its walkability and connectivity, integrate sustainable transportation options, and cater to the growing tourism sector. Additionally, the project had to address the complex task of maintaining the district’s Najdi architectural identity while incorporating contemporary design elements, ensuring the transformation felt cohesive and respectful of the area’s history.
Approach:
To meet these challenges, the project focused on transforming the boulevards of the district, keeping the existing businesses intact while introducing new retail and food establishments that offered diverse options for the community. The design prioritized enhanced walkability, introducing dedicated pedestrian lanes and cycling lanes to improve connectivity within the district and to surrounding areas. The plan also proposed the preservation of historical elements, including the Old Riyadh City wall, and integrated them into the new design, paying tribute to the district’s cultural and historical significance. The architectural approach balanced Najdi architectural styles with modern Salmani design elements, maintaining the region’s traditional identity while accommodating contemporary urban needs. The overall urban design promoted sustainability, connectivity, and vibrancy.
Impact:
The project’s impact will be profound, as it will revitalize the Justice Palace District into a dynamic urban space where history and modernity coexist. The enhanced pedestrian network and introduction of cycling lanes will make the district more accessible and promote sustainable urban living. The careful preservation of heritage, such as the integration of the Old Riyadh City wall, will provide a cultural narrative that connects the past with the future. The district will become a hub for tourism and community engagement, with its improved public spaces and diverse commercial offerings. Ultimately, the project will serve as a model for how heritage preservation and urban development can harmoniously come together, setting a standard for future urban regeneration efforts in Riyadh.
Humanizing the District
The Justice Palace District development project in Riyadh represents a significant endeavor to breathe new life into the heart of the city. With a focus on preserving its rich historical and architectural heritage, this ambitious initiative seeks to transform existing streets, uplift facades, and imbue the area with the distinctive character of Salmani Architecture. The ultimate goal is to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the region while paying homage to its outstanding heritage values.
A Salmani look and feel
The architectural vision of the Justice Palace Project draws its inspiration from Salmani architecture, which seeks to reinterpret the traditional Najdi architecture of Saudi Arabia in a contemporary context. This influence is evident in the layout, building forms, materials, and visual elements that pay homage to the Najdi heritage, as exemplified by the adjacent At-Turaif heritage site. The project aims to showcase the beauty of Salmani Architecture through renovated facades, streetscape elements, and a carefully selected palette of materials and colors.
