Challenge:
Situated near the historic core of Tripoli, Burj Bulayla needed to establish a strong architectural presence while respecting the rich cultural and urban fabric of the city. The challenge was to design a modern commercial landmark that seamlessly integrates traditional Libyan architectural elements with contemporary high-rise structures. Additionally, maximizing visibility and interaction with the street corner was essential to reinforce its prominent urban identity.
Approach:
The design of Burj Bulayla was guided by the concept of merging heritage with modernity, creating a distinctive form that enhances its visibility and engagement with the surrounding cityscape. To achieve this, the two tilted square towers, ranging from 20 to 24 floors, were oriented toward the street corner, ensuring optimal exposure and an iconic silhouette.
The architectural language draws from regional traditions, with subtle geometric patterns and materials that reflect Tripoli’s historic character. The ground and mezzanine floors were envisioned as transparent and inviting spaces, housing banking services, entrance lobbies, and a versatile showroom, fostering a dynamic interaction with pedestrians. Meanwhile, the upper floors were designed as open-plan office spaces, offering flexibility, natural light, and efficient layouts to accommodate evolving business needs.
