Challenge

The Jubbah project is located within a historically and environmentally sensitive context, recognized for its rich cultural heritage and its status as part of a Jubbah Rock Art Site. The primary challenge was to introduce a contemporary development that enhances visitor experience and supports tourism growth without compromising the authenticity and integrity of the site. The harsh desert climate, fragile landscape, and archaeological significance required a careful balance between accessibility, conservation, and modern functionality, while ensuring the project aligns with national ambitions for cultural preservation and sustainable tourism under Saudi Vision 2030.

Approach

Dar Al Omran (DAO) approached the project through a deeply contextual and multidisciplinary methodology, integrating master planning, architecture, and landscape design into a unified vision. The design strategy was rooted in preserving the natural terrain and cultural narrative of Jubbah, allowing the built environment to emerge as a subtle extension of the landscape rather than an imposition upon it. Spatial planning emphasized controlled visitor movement, enhancing the journey through the site while protecting sensitive areas. Architectural language drew inspiration from local materials, forms, and textures, reflecting the surrounding desert and heritage context. Sustainable design principles were embedded throughout, including passive environmental strategies, minimal land disturbance, and the integration of shaded pathways and gathering spaces to improve thermal comfort. The project also incorporated interpretive elements to enrich cultural understanding, ensuring that the development not only serves as infrastructure but as an educational and experiential platform.

Impact

The project establishes a model for responsible development within heritage-rich environments, demonstrating how contemporary design can coexist with and enhance cultural landscapes. It elevates Jubbah as a key destination for cultural tourism, improving accessibility, visitor engagement, and overall experience while safeguarding its historical significance. By reinforcing the connection between people, place, and history, the project contributes to long-term socio-economic development and supports the Kingdom’s vision for sustainable tourism. It stands as a testament to DAO’s ability to translate cultural authenticity into meaningful, future-ready environments that respect the past while enabling growth.

Challenge

The Al Rajhi Mosque project required the creation of a contemporary religious landmark that embodies spiritual dignity while responding to the architectural and functional demands of a large-scale worship environment. The challenge lay in translating the mosque’s symbolic and communal role into a design language that is both timeless and innovative, avoiding literal historic imitation while preserving the essence of Islamic architectural identity. The architectural vision sought to accommodate expansive prayer spaces within a coherent and serene spatial experience, while resolving structural complexity arising from the mosque’s defining semi-organic form. Achieving harmony between monumental presence, structural feasibility, and human-centered worship experience demanded a refined balance between form, proportion, and sacred atmosphere.

Approach

Dar Al Omran (DAO), in consortium with Yalin Architects, approached the mosque through a concept-driven architectural strategy centered on abstraction, structural expression, and spatial unity. The design evolved from the idea of a fragmented dome reinterpreted as a hidden, integrated system rather than a conventional singular form. This concept generated a semi-organic composition created through the piling and interlocking of different architectural volumes, allowing diverse functional zones to merge into one cohesive whole. The main dome spans a 30-by-30-meter quadratic plan and is anchored by four major structural pillars, creating a powerful central volume that defines the mosque’s spiritual core. Concrete cassette construction was employed to shape the dome without ornamental excess, giving the structure a restrained yet monumental character. Materiality was intentionally minimal, relying on texture, mass, and light to evoke reverence. The architectural language emphasizes purity of form, where the interplay between solid structure and filtered light shapes an atmosphere of contemplation and transcendence.

Impact

The Al Rajhi Mosque establishes a bold contemporary interpretation of mosque architecture, demonstrating how religious spaces can remain deeply rooted in Islamic identity while embracing modern structural and formal innovation. Its distinctive dome concept transforms the mosque into both a civic landmark and a place of spiritual gathering, offering worshippers a space that is visually powerful yet emotionally serene. The project contributes to the evolving language of sacred architecture in Saudi Arabia by redefining monumentality through abstraction rather than ornamentation. As a result, the mosque stands as a significant architectural statement, one that reinforces cultural continuity, enriches Riyadh’s urban fabric, and reflects DAO’s ability to shape spiritually resonant environments through design clarity and architectural depth.

Planning interventions focused on rehabilitating degraded zones, reorganizing incompatible land uses, and introducing a coherent spatial framework for recreation, ecological conservation, and controlled development. Landscape strategies emphasized native vegetation, erosion control, water-sensitive design, and the creation of interconnected parks, trails, and pedestrian environments that reinforce ecological resilience. The regeneration framework also strengthened urban identity by preserving heritage assets along the valley and ensuring that built interventions remain subordinate to the natural terrain. Through this approach, the valley was repositioned not as residual land between developments, but as Riyadh’s defining environmental spine and an urban oasis central to quality of life.

.

Impact

The project transformed Wadi Hanifah into a benchmark model for ecological urban regeneration in the Middle East, converting a neglected environmental corridor into a vibrant public landscape that supports recreation, biodiversity, tourism, and sustainable urban growth. It significantly improved environmental performance by restoring natural water systems, reducing pollution, and enhancing flood resilience, while simultaneously creating a network of parks and public open spaces that serve diverse communities across Riyadh. Socially, the regeneration elevated quality of life by providing accessible recreational environments and reconnecting residents with the valley’s natural and cultural heritage. Economically, it increased land value and unlocked new investment potential along the corridor, reinforcing the valley’s role as a catalyst for balanced urban development.
