Challenge:
The project required a thoughtful integration of Makkah’s traditional architectural heritage with modern materials and technologies. Situated just 1,500 meters from Al Haram, it needed to accommodate a massive number of pilgrims—over 26,000 guests—within a confined urban setting while maintaining an environment of spiritual tranquility and cultural authenticity.
Approach:
The approach focused on blending traditional design elements with contemporary construction practices to meet the demands of a modern pilgrimage facility. The architecture incorporated iconic regional motifs reinterpreted with durable, cutting-edge materials. Spatial organization was optimized: the three basement levels supported parking and essential services such as a grey water treatment plant, while the ground and mezzanine levels created an inviting reception area. Higher floors featured praying halls, restaurants, and well-appointed guest rooms, ensuring comfort, functionality, and a seamless flow of visitors.
Impact:
Al Kiswa & Al-Tayseer Pilgrim Residences stand as a remarkable example of how traditional urban heritage can harmonize with modern demands. By successfully merging Makkah’s rich architectural traditions with state-of-the-art building systems, the project not only provides a practical solution for accommodating thousands of pilgrims but also enhances their spiritual experience. It sets a new benchmark for large-scale hospitality projects in religious contexts, reflecting both cultural authenticity and innovation.
