Challenge
As Abu Dhabi sought to develop Hudayriat Island into a thriving urban extension, the challenge lay in balancing large-scale development with the island’s fragile coastal ecosystem. The project needed to respect the region’s historical and environmental values while integrating modern infrastructure and land use planning.
Approach
The master plan was conceptualized to redefine the island’s relationship with its natural surroundings, ensuring harmony between urban growth and ecological preservation. Inspired by the organic formations of marine ecosystems, the design introduced a framework of naturally shaped islands and waterfront developments that complemented the existing coastal character. Strategic zoning was employed to allocate areas for recreation, tourism, and residential functions while preserving key environmental features.
Impact
The Hudayriat Island Master Plan set a precedent for sustainable coastal urbanism in Abu Dhabi. By emphasizing integration with nature, the project provided a blueprint for responsible development, where cultural heritage and ecological integrity were maintained alongside contemporary urban needs. The master plan reinforced the vision of creating an environmentally conscious and culturally resonant island destination, supporting Abu Dhabi’s long-term development objectives.
